One of the biggest factors in the success or failure of any musical will be the creative team attached to the project. This team on a musical comprises a director, a musical director, a choreographer and a design team. These people will drive the creation of the project forward, through the planning and pre-production phase, through rehearsals and into previews and press night. If the musical is new, the team may work with the composer and writer, making dramaturgical changes to the text, and helping to craft the production musically.
The responsibility, especially on a juggernaut of a musical in the West End or on tour is, of course, immense and so putting together the right creative team is a key responsibility of a producer or artistic director. The risk is always huge, and so having people at the helm who feel safe, and confident in their knowledge of the art form, is important to producers.
